These are four character designs for my internship. Someone else came up with the witch character, I just came up with the costume concepts. The first pass (top) is desaturated for a reason - I figured since they're witches their color schemes should be "dead" so to speak. That lead to them looking too similar, however, so the second pass was an attempt to remedy this. I'm finding color is a good tool for differentiating characters. Elemental themes on the other hand I am still debating on.

The character in question

So this is for the internship I'm currently doing. The character is a Hell creature (honestly it's hard to explain). This is my first work in Maya... that I'm happy with. I'm a Maya noob so forgive me if I butcher all the terminology. My art director sent me the 3D model and wanted me to paint the texture map for it. I was checking some of the sample artists he sent me to base the texture off of and I'm amazed how 3D artists can get so much detail in to small texture maps. And make it look real. There are times where I look at the texture map and am completely lost as to what it is I'm painting.

An update: Fixed the atmosphere a little. Fixed some foreground elements. Still really lost with the water.

This is still really dirty. Kind of frustrating, but I got to work my way through it.

Another weekly challenge piece for ConceptArt's Environment of the Week. This is a dragon hatchery with the elemental theme "Water". I have to add the nest/eggs. Either its going to be one nest in the middle area or several eggs scattered about. I think I'm going to put a silhouette of a dragon coming in from the background waterfall. We'll see.

Thumbnails: The topic for this image is simple: "Treehouse". I had an idea that it was going to be like a bird's nest/tribal hut in a tree paired with cocoons for whatever reason. I tried to get a more dynamic shot but ended up going with the straight on view. I may revisit a few of the tilted angle thumbnails though.

Working out the greyscale values before committing to color. I have time so why not?

Detailing. I know I'm going to hit the coloring stage soon... hopefully...

Rock painting tutorial

1) Desaturated the original image. I'm not even sure who the original artist is but I wish I knew so I could credit them. It was posted by someone on ConceptArt.org wanting to know how to paint rocks like this. I wanted to know as well so I did a quick study.

2) Drew some lines to represent the general plane change of the forms. There are distinct top planes and side planes.

3) So I took the traced linework and moved it to a new document, then painted in the simple light side vs dark side. A lot can be said with just two values.

4) Removing the linework you can see the form is for the most part already "there".

5) Some secondary details. Really just breaking down the bigger forms into smaller forms and adding in those subtle plane changes where ever seemed fit.

6) Cracks added topped with some specular (ping) lighting just to make forms pop. Some detail in the shadow as well due to reflective light coming from below. The rule of thumb is shadows are never completely black, and there is usually light in shadow (thank you Background Painting :D). Once the forms are defined and the light source is shown it's pretty much onto the nitty gritty detail work at this point.

Waterfall Fortress

Final version: Maybe. I'm happy enough with this to leave it. Good enough for the deadline. I'll give it a day and see if I want to come back to it.

First color pass: It's working out alright. I feel like a bag of skittles exploded onto my canvas, I'm not use to contrasting colors like this. I really need to come up with a better castle idea then the lame fortresses I have so far. So freaking generic.

Color study lineup: Checking to see what works. I wanted the skylight behind the wall to represent that fiery glow you see in movies when wars happen. Lord of the Rings or something. My worst fear looking at these are that they look like a variety of easter eggs. I think I like the blue/green lushiness of #3/#4 plus the brown of #5.

Thumbnail lineup: Attempting to see which value scheme reads best. I think number 2 has some really great drama, but the sky needs fixing. Maybe I'll pull from number 5 as far as that goes.

The final print pass: I added more colors for vibrancy. The print will probably be brighter, and washed out so this is probably good. I'm happy with how this turned out so for the most part, it's time to say it's done and to send it to print.

Better idea, and I think I fixed the composition. Still needs more color, as I'm noticing the thumbnail is almost monotone.

Pre-final pass: I'm trying to make that cloth behind the platform. I might turn off the "beacon-like" lighting too because it throws off the tapestry. There is going to be a throne in that thing soon, I just have to decide on its silhouette.

Value studies - I'm thinking a combination of #1 and #2 would be good.

2011 Disney's Imagineering Project

These are the concept pieces I had for the 2011 Disney's Imagineering Project. The ride was loosely based on time traveling and finding Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. The ride itself was a summary of 4 Disney shorts featuring Mickey Mouse. My idea was to present my pieces in the style of those vintage Disneyland ride posters. We didn't qualify but I had fun nonetheless.

I don't know if I like the composition of this. I tried to do a SketchUp mock-up and play with view angles but everything came out too compressed. I still need to tweak this but its getting there. Maybe.

Another study. Too lazy to go detail crazy on the ribbon. Sort of nagging me even though this is a quick study. I'll probably paint the ribbon on its own for the next painting.

Some observations:
1) Round reflective surfaces reflect whats around it. (What a revelation, huh?)
2) Reflection sharpness depends on surface texture.
3) Color on flat surfaces lighten a little as light passes over.
4) Water/glass softens and distorts.

Decided to do a simple still life study. I've decided to address my problem of understanding light and shadow and how its affected by color.

Some observations:

1) The local color (color of the object) is affected by the color of the light.

2) Shadows will be the contrasting color mixed with the local color.

3) Cast shadows are more opaque.

4) Shadows are less saturated.

She'll be putting these in front of the served food (buffet style). Graphic design isn't my thing and I honestly dislike this kind of work but she wants me to do it. I've been experimenting more with Illustrator in the process (one reason why I dislike graphic design - Illustrator and thinking out your paths).

Baby Shower Invites

Howdy howdy and bowdy bowdy,

I'm going to be an uncle in a couple of months so my sister asked me to design the invitations for her baby shower. This is something completely out of my realm but I guess free resources are free resources, heh. The theme for the shower is a circus/Moulin Rouge affair. This was a strange task because Moulin Rouge has a red/yellow/warm color scheme but my sister wanted this baby blue diamond pattern color scheme instead (she's having a boy). I'll tell you something; sometimes you just need to throw the prompt out the window and roll with the punches when you know its just not going to work. Flex your artistic AU-THOR-I-TY!
